243 WSSM

The 243 WSSM is a new centerfire rifle cartridge developed in partnership with Browning Arms Company and Winchester ammunition, making its debut and introduced to the shooting public in 2003. The 243 WSSM is a commercial cartridge based on the 404 jeffery cartridge case, shortening and necking down to .243" caliber and sharpening the shoulder angle to 28 degrees the new 243 WSSM cartridge has more than ample case capacity for its dual purpose use. The 243 WSSM cartridge achieves superior dual purpose performance at the factory level, providing varmint and deer hunters with a high level of .243 caliber performance. The 243 WSSM cartridge is the first dual purpose cartridge where you do not have to handload to cater your liking of this cartridge for varmint or deer, the factory offerings are good and work accurately.
The 243 WSSM factory loadings show a velocity of 4,060 feet per second for a 55 grain bullet for varminting and this alone is an astounding velocity for any .243" caliber cartridge, thus making the bullet energy of this cartridge an easy 500 yard varminter. The 243 WSSM factory loadings show a velocity of 3,150 feet per second for a 95 grain bullet for medium sized deer hunting, thus making the bullet energy of this cartridge an easy 350 yard medium sized deer cartridge. For any deer hunter wanting a 1 rifle set-up for long range varminting and deer hunting, the 243 WSSM cartridge is highly recommended as it offers excellent down range trajectories with plenty of bullet energy for very effective distant kills.

Reloading

For the Antelope, Hog, Blacktail, Whitetail or Mule Deer hunter hand-loading or reloading his or her own 243 WSSM ammunition, Ramshot Magnum rifle powder does an impressive job of launching 100 grain .243" diameter bullets at high velocity. Ramshots online reloading data shows that a 100 grain .243" diameter Sierra Boat-Tail Gameking bullet using 47.0 grains of Ramshot Magnum powder can be driven to a velocity of 2,850 feet per second, loaded at a maximum length of 2.310". This load does not top out until the 100 grain bullet is at 3,150 feet per second in the 243 WSSM at a chamber pressure of 62,500 PSI.
For the 100 grain bullet reload if you sighted your 243 WSSM deer rifle in dead on at 230 yards it would only be 2 inches high at 150 yards and only 2.5 inches low at 275 yards which would be an excellent deer load, this load still produces enough bullet energy at 375 yards to take deer with a remaining bullet energy of 1,228 foot pounds.
