25 WSSM

The 25 WSSM is a new centerfire rifle cartridge developed in partnership with Browning Arms Company and Winchester ammunition, making its debut and introduced to the shooting public in 2004. The 25 WSSM is a commercial cartridge based on the 404 jeffery cartridge case, shortening and necking down to .257" caliber and sharpening the shoulder angle to 30 degrees the new 25 WSSM cartridge has more than enough case capacity for its intended dual purpose use.
The 25 WSSM cartridge achieves its useful purpose as a very flat shooting varmint cartridge and as an excellent deer cartridge, 25 caliber is a time proven caliber for deer size animals. The 25 WSSM factory loadings show a velocity of 3,470 feet per second for a 85 grain varmint round and 3,100 feet per second for a 110 grain bullet for deer hunting and this translates to very low recoil for the shooter with plenty of bullet energy at the 700 yard mark for varmints and predators and the 400 yard mark to flatten a white-tailed deer size animal.
The 25 WSSM cartridge is a well thought out cartridge as Winchester is no stranger in 25 caliber cartridge development. Winchester has developed 4 cartridges in this caliber over a 111 year time span; (25-20 in 1893), (25-35 in 1895), (256 Winchester Magnum in 1960) and (25 Winchester Super Short Magnum in 2004). The 25 WSSM cartridge, chambered in a super short actioned light weight rifle may well be the ultimate combination for the 1 gun hunter of strictly varmints, predators and white-tailed deer size game.

Reloading

For the Antelope, Hog, Blacktail, Whitetail or Mule Deer hunter hand-loading or reloading his or her own 25 WSSM ammunition wanting low recoil, Accurate 2700 rifle powder does an impressive job of launching 100 grain .257" diameter bullets at high velocity with low recoil. Accurates online reloading data shows that a 100 grain .257" diameter Nosler Ballistic-Tip bullet using 43.7 grains of Accurate 2700 powder can be driven to a velocity of 2,982 feet per second, loaded at a maximum length of 2.300". This load does not top out until the 100 grain bullet is at 3,313 feet per second in the 25 WSSM at a chamber pressure of 64,800 PSI.
For the 100 grain bullet reload if you sighted your 25 WSSM rifle in dead on at 235 yards it would only be 2 inches high at 150 yards and only 2.0 inches low at 275 yards which would be an excellent deer load, this load still produces enough bullet energy at 400 yards to take deer with a remaining bullet energy of 1,240 foot pounds.
