300 Winchester Magnum:

300 Winchester Magnum:
The 300 Winchester Magnum centerfire rifle cartridge is a .30" caliber, belted, bottle neck cartridge case design that should not be confused with the newer 300 Winchester Short Magnum that is of a bottle neck cartridge design with no belt. This cartridge was developed by Winchester based entirely off of their own 338 Winchester Magnum cartridge by moving the shoulder area of the cartridge forward .156", lengthening the case .120" and necking it down to .308" diameter. Winchester introduced their new 300 Winchester Magnum to the public in 1963 and was instantly accepted by the rather large shooting public in North America. The 300 Winchester Magnum gained fame and reputation rapidly as this cartridge features a large case capacity, by which it drives bullets in the weight range of 150 grain, 165 grain and 180 grain at top speeds when compared to other .30 caliber cartridges, making it a top choice cartridge for hunters in North America. These large powder charges are ignited by the the use of .210" diameter size large rifle primers of the magnum primer type or class-c primers, which by the way supply more heat with higher pressures than standard .210" diameter class-a or class-b large rifle primers for large magnum powder charges.

The 300 Winchester Magnum is definately a long range rifle cartridge. It is one of the few cartridges that really make the case for free boring and a longer rifle action, with heavy bullets seated deeply in the cartridge case it's full potential can not be realized by the limited case capacity of deep seated bullets in the 200 grain to 220 grain weight range. However loaded with bullets that weigh 150 grains to 180 grains plenty of performance can be extracted from the 300 Winchester Magnum cartridge case capacity.

The 300 Winchester Magnum has always given top performance to those that handload their own ammunition for the simple fact you can tweak loadings for top performance. Hornady has seen fit to address this issue with their superformance ammunition offering loadings to boost performance for non-reloaders. The ballistics on these rounds are impressive breathing more fire into an already great cartridge.

Reloading Specifications:
Bullet Diameter = .308".
Maximum Case Length = 2.620".
Trimmed Case Length = 2.610".
Primer Size = Large Rifle.
Maximum Cartridge Overall Length = 3.340".

Reloading Data:
For the Antelope, Hog, Blacktail, Whitetail or Mule Deer hunter hand-loading or reloading his or her own 300 Winchester Magnum ammunition, Western Powders, Ramshot Hunter rifle powder does an impressive job of launching 150 grain .308" diameter bullets at high velocity. Ramshots online reloading data shows that a 150 grain .308" diameter Hornady SST bullet using 69.9 grains of Ramshot Hunter powder can be driven to a velocity of 3,118 feet per second loaded at a maximum cartridge overall length of 3.340" in the 300 Winchester Magnum. This load does not top out until the 150 grain bullet is at 3,408 feet per second at a chamber pressure of 63,982 PSI. For the 150 grain bullet reload if you sighted your 300 Winchester Magnum hunting rifle in dead on at 245 yards it would only be 2 inches high at 150 yards and only 3.0 inches low at 300 yards which would be an excellent Antelope, Hog, Blacktail Deer, Whitetail Deer or Mule Deer load.
