6.5x55mm Swedish Mauser History and General Information. The 6.5x55mm Swedish Mauser cartridge was developed by a joint Swedish/Norwegian commission in 1893. It was officially adopted as the military cartridge of Sweden and Norway in 1894.
The 6.5x55mm Swedish Mauser became a very popular sporting rifle cartridge in Europe (as it is an accurate cartridge) and was widely used in Europe for target shooting, including Olympic free rifle competition.
The 6.5x55mm cartridge remained virtually unknown in the United States until the late 1950's, when shipments of cheap surplus military rifles flooded the American gun market.
The 6.5x55mm Swedish Mauser is chambered by many U.S. gun manufacturers now and it is an excellent, accurate and fairly flat shooting cartridge that is capable of taking most big game animals in the lower 48 states, when loaded with 140 grain bullets at 2600 feet per second velocity it is a very adequate round for deer out to about 300 yards.
The 6.5x55mm Swedish Mauser when loaded with 120 grain bullets recoil is quite minimal, very pleasant to shoot and is highly recommended for shooters that are recoil conscious.
